What was your inspiration?

My inspiration was an activity we did in our Math Methods Class where we had to determine how many squares were in this picture:

What is the lesson?

The lesson would center (1) recognizing geometric patterns and shapes and (2) understanding how combinations/permutations work on a very basic level. I would have students analyze/count the rectangles they see in an image of something familiar to them (in this case, their school) and think about different ways they may be able to group or count these shapes.

What grades is the lesson for? Grade 5

How could you connect this to other lessons/subjects (Extensions)?

We could use this lesson to talk about architecture and symmetry/
