S.T.E.A.M Project: Collaborative Murals

The Problem

The Inspiration
My inspiration for this lesson was the gym at the school I work at, which is home to old chipping wall paint and dark lighting. My lesson centers around planning and creating a mural in the gym of Richard Wright Elementary School. The mural would be a STEAM themed mural that replaced the dull chipping paint in the gym, and brought life as well as connections to science, technology, engineering, arts and math into the gym. Each grade K-5 would be assigned an element of STEAM, in which they would research and brainstorm the topic and decide what elements could be represented in a mural. The 5th grade would be the leaders of this project, and they would be responsible for scaling the mock-ups to the size of the wall (math), calculating/organizing supplies needs (math), painting (arts), and integrating STEAM principles into a cohesive mural that will bring elements of STEAM to life in the gym.
